  • Syeedah JoVaughn White

    2022 LaVenus Jordan Scholarship Recipient

I plan to use my post secondary education to advocate for the youth in the community. As a future high school counselor, it is extremely important to be able to empathize with my students. I believe I have the tools and experience to help them throughout their academic career and their daily lives. I believe that I would especially be able to guide those students who are young parents, like myself. Advocacy and social justice are two concepts I plan to emphasize in my future profession as a school counselor.

In August 2022, I started a new position at Project Create in DC as a Program Coordinator. I also recently began my second year in graduate school at Bowie State University. Looking forward to my daughter’s 8th birthday in November.

    2022 Scholarship Recipient

I am pursuing my secondary education degree (BA in history). I know teaching is the way I will be able to create a sense of positive outreach in the community through the school, the parents, the other teachers, and the students. A lot of young girls who get pregnant in high school need probably the most help of anybody. For me, it would be paying back energy to the universe to show them grace in place of judgment. Because who better than a woman who has walked a mile in their shoes?

I plan to obtain my associate’s degree from Howard Community College and transfer to a four-year university to obtain my bachelor’s. I am looking to pursue my degree to demonstrate to other parents that just because you have a child at some young age doesn’t mean you have to stop pursuing your dreams. Obtaining a degree and being someone from my family that is first generation is going to be a huge achievement, and it has not been anything easy, but I managed not to give up.

I am the first generation in my family to attend college, as well as the first to have a child amongst my siblings. As for a long-term goal, I would like to become a school counselor to help families in need and inform them of the resources offered.
